Drink From His Well
Have you ever been so thirsty that all you wanted was a drink of iced cold water? Remember how it felt when you finally got it? That feeling of relief and being quenched is something that our souls also desire. Proverbs 25:25 says, ”Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.” (ESV) When someone comes to know Jesus Christ they come because they recognize that there is an insatiable thirst that cannot be satisfied by anyone else, but the Lord. That is the Gospel aka the good news.
This is the very reason why Jesus refers to Himself as living water. John 7:37-39 37, “On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as[a] the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” (ESV) Imagine if you will, that if any part of you or your spirit is dry that it can be refreshed by simply coming to Jesus. It seems elementary, but it is what Jesus said. Psalm 42:1b says, “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.” (ESV) When someone pants, that means they are craving something. In this case it is water that the deer yearns for.
I find that it is so odd that we think that other things, people, places or even ideas will give us what we desire most. Though all the success that we achieve in this life will give us temporary happiness there is a joy, peace and assurance that will not be measured any other way except by faith in Christ Jesus. In John 14:6 it says “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (KJV) It is clear that nothing else will ever be to us what we truly long for deeply. Jesus told us we cannot get to the Father any other way either. If we even attempt we would be considered a thief and a robber. (John 10:10) He is the way.
In John the 4th chapter, Jesus speaks to the Samaritan woman at the well. She is drawing her water and Jesus simply asks for a drink. She counters by saying that she was a Samaritan and Jews don’t usually associate with them. She questioned His motives for her even speaking with her since she was a Samaritan. Jesus went through Samaria intentionally. There is historical evidence that proved that the Samaritans were of mixed ethnicity and weren’t of pure jewish blood. That was part of the reason the Jews didn’t mingle with them. In spite of this, they believe just as the Jews did that the Messiah would come. Jesus came to reveal himself to a woman whose life, like ours, had holes in it. A woman who was spiritually thirsty. She longed for love in all the wrong places. She found worth in things and people who could never satisfy. When she came to know Jesus her whole life was changed. He spoke a Word to her that gave her soul the living water it longed for.
My encouragement to you today is to seek the living water in Jesus Christ. If you are a believer, but are parched you can still drink from the well. If you are in a state of unbelief or rebellion against God, He stands at the door of your heart and knocks. (Rev. 3:20) All Jesus wants to do is give you a love you have never known. He wants to fill the empty places that you can never fill on your own. He wants you to experience an intimacy with Him that you will never be found elsewhere. So if you are tired, weary, thirsty and in need of true rest, the invitation is here waiting for you to accept it. Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (NASB) Finally, He invites you to drink from His well.
Let’s pray: Lord, as we come to you in prayer we ask that you will refresh our souls. For those who have tried to carry the loads of life alone, lift those burdens and give us your water to drink. For those who have fallen away or never knew you, show them that you are the living water. You have a well that will never run dry. There is nothing too hard or impossible with you. (Matt. 19:26) You sent Your Son to give us eternal life. He longs to commune with us if we only believe in His name. Lord, we accept the invitation freely. We lay aside pride, fear and unbelief to receive the precious gift that only You can give. Thank you Lord for your Spirit in Jesus' matchless name we pray. Amen.
