My Priority

"Nobody's life is ever all balanced. It's a conscious decision to choose your priorities every day". - Quote by Elisabeth Hasselbeck

It's interesting that the more we have, the more time it takes for us to maintain it. It becomes harder and harder for us to fit in our hobbies and even people in the way we used to. Time is a resource. If we aren't careful, we will struggle to even have time for God.

I realize that life is hectic, chaotic and downright busy at times. Regardless, we make time for the things that we want or are of our utmost priority. When you love something or someone you will find a way to share what you have no matter how big or small with them.

As the seasons change in my life, I've had to do an internal self-check often. Am I giving the Lover of my soul attention? Is God a priority? Am I praying regularly? Am I making it a habit to read my Word? Am I being intentional in my giving? How about my church attendance? Am I doing it like I should?

I've seen people who made time for the people that were their biggest support when they were down or just getting started, only to put distance between themselves when life got easier. I've also seen people do this with God. When they needed a blessing or miracle they sought God shamelessly. They were the first ones at church on Sunday. They were in their Bibles searching for answers without a doubt. Most of all, they were praying without ceasing.

The problem with this situation and circumstance is that if we're not careful we will drift slowly away from God. In our drifting, we also move away from people that look like God. Whether we acknowledge it or not, our lack of complete commitment is a slow erosion that happens over time. In this process, it will very likely take a tragedy or something big to shake us back into the reality that we need God.

In Matthew 6:33 it says, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (KJV) That verse tells us that diligence to pursue God unlocks so much more than physical things. It unlocks the wisdom needed from day to day. It unlocks strength and even activates our faith.

It's as simple as this, when we seek God first He's always prepared to bless us. That's not because He's a genie in a bottle. It is because He's faithful to show us that when we prioritize Him then there's nothing we will keep from us. It says it clearly in Psalms 84:11, "For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly." (KJV)

Of course, that's not the only reason to seek God. We seek Him to get closer. As we get closer to God we find out how amazing it is to know the God of the universe. We see how intimately He longs to reveal Himself to us and how important we are to Him. He says it explicitly in Jeremiah 33:3, "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ (NIV)

When we prioritize God our lives, though never easy, begin to make more sense. Our purpose becomes transparent and we can move towards it steadily. Christ then becomes the anchor that keeps us from drifting away. He becomes the grounding wire in our world helping us mature, manage ourselves and circumstances with certainty.

As you are reading this, ask yourself, "Where do my priorities lie?" "Is Christ first in my life?" If not, ask, "Why?" If the answer is no then, it is time to reassign and rearrange our list of responsibilities. I can promise you one thing, getting closer to God will never be a mistake.

Let me prayer for or with you! ~ If you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, pray this simple prayer:
Lord, I realize today that I haven't prioritized You. I repent. Forgive me for my sins. Today, I confess with my mouth that the Lord Jesus Christ died and rose again for my sins according to Romans 10:9. I receive You as my Lord and Savior. Take complete control of my life. Thank you Lord that I am now saved. I trust you and thank you for my new life. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Let today be the day you say God is my priority. Have a wonderful day!

In thinking about how I use my time, I am so thankful that, in retirement, I have time to spend with God. I praise Him that He has enabled and motivated me to stay pretty consistent with that. But I still struggle with hurrying - a sort of going through the motions. I find that if I shake up my routine, it helps. I will change what devotional I'm using. I will change the process I'm using for confession, etc.

In looking at how I prioritize my time, I want it to be God in and through all my day. Then comes my husband, my children/grandchildren, then friends. I think there can be seasons with friends. Some friends I've had for over 20 years, and our friendship is solid. But we may not see much of each other for long periods of time. It's an ebb and flow thing, and I think it's okay. Also, God sometimes places us in a spot to come alongside someone for only a while. That's okay too. The point is to be responsive to His will.
